Consuming Toxic Chemicals
Our love affair with chemicals is getting complicated. We eat them, breathe them, slather them on our skin. And when we get sick, we take more of them. A metanalysis in the Journal of Hazardous Materials has reviewed 143,000 peer-reviewed papers to track the patterns of emergence and decline of toxic chemicals. Shockingly, this study reveals that 14 years is an average time span between the onset of initial safety concerns to the height of concern and appropriate action. Emblematic of this pattern is DDT, perchlorate, 1,4-dioxane, triclosan, nanomaterials, and microplastics, making their way into the enviroment and our homes.
The paper explores the hemming and hawing that we do, as a medical-industrial complex to drag our heals, in flagrant dismissal of the precautionary principal. It appears to echo the 17 year lag in scientific data making its way into the doctor’s office. What this suggests, is that we need to take matters into our own hands.
The Environmental Working Group and Fearless Parent help us do this. Shop wisely, green your home, support your immune system through sleep, diet, movement, and relaxation response, and set an intention out into the universe that we curb the hubris driving the toxification of our planet and our species.
